Independent Concussion Consultation - World Rugby

World Rugby employed Independent Concussion Consultants (ICC) at RWC 2015 and 2019, where it was well received by team doctors. • When you do the ICC referral in SCRM, you’ll select the doctor from the dropdown.

  • It’s a good idea to email the ICC first to check they’re free in the timeframe you need.

If the ICC you’ve selected can’t do the assessment, they can decline it through the referral email they will get, you will also be notified if this happens, please let me know and provide the name of another ICC you would like to use and I can reassign it for you. Those of you familiar with the portal can also do this yourselves by going to the ICC tab and using the three-dot menu on the right-hand side.

When to use an ICC

  • Only when the player meets the criteria and you believe they’re ready to return to contact.

  • The ICC is there to give an independent review to support you in the return-to-play process.

  • This applies to players on the 7-day pathway (no concussion history, normal HIA3) or the 12-day pathway (concussion history). You will get an email after the HIA3 letting you know the return pathway the player is on.

When not to use an ICC

  • Not for players who are still symptomatic or you believe not ready for return to contact.

  • It isn’t intended as a second opinion if the player isn’t yet ready for contact.
